F.A.Q.

Most people benefit from psychotherapy. The degree of success varies due to many factors, including the goodness of fit between therapist and client, the severity of the issues that the client brings to therapy, and the time and commitment both client and therapist bring to the process. Benefits can include improved relationships, access to a greater range of emotions, improved ability to shift from one emotional state to another, improved self-confidence, and resolution of long-standing emotional and relational issues. Because of the uniqueness of every individual it is not possible to guarantee a positive outcome. However, bringing up difficulties and potential issues as they arise can not only help resolve those issues but actually benefit the therapy. I welcome your questions and concerns about our work, my methods and modalities, and our relationship.
Therapy can last anywhere from a few weeks to many years, depending on many factors. Please don’t hesitate to bring it up with me if you have questions or concerns around this.
Therapy sessions are typically once a week, but can also be more or less often depending on the needs of the client and availability of the therapist.
Sessions are scheduled for 50 minutes. If both therapist and client feel it is beneficial to continue longer, and are able to continue, sessions may be extended.
After we have had one session to determine if we wish to work together, we will work out a fee that is affordable for you and that satisfies the needs of my practice. If we are unable to come to such a fee, I will provide referrals to lower-cost therapy.
No, but I will be happy to prepare a statement for you to submit to your insurance for reimbursement. Please note that disclosure of confidential information may be required by your health insurance carrier to process claims. Only that information required will be communicated to the carrier. Please also note that I have no control over what insurance companies do with the information I submit or who has access to this information.
The information disclosed by you in sessions and the written records pertaining to those sessions are generally confidential, except with your written permission. In the treatment of a minor, I may disclose information to the custodial parent(s) or legal guardian(s) that I consider clinically appropriate. There are exceptions to confidentiality as required by law including but not limited to reporting child, dependent adult, or elder abuse or neglect; threats of violence towards yourself, others, or the property of another; when a client’s records or information is subpoenaed by a court of law or sought by law enforcement under HIPAA and the USA Patriot Act; and when you make your mental or emotional state an issue in a legal proceeding.
When you first call, I will speak briefly with you to set up our first appointment. I usually, though not always, wait until we meet face-to-face to hear in detail what brings you to therapy. In our first session, which I offer at no cost, we will have the opportunity to decide whether we both feel we would like to work together. If you have questions or would like a free consultation, email me. I look forward to talking with you.
